About myndHUB
As most of us know, media channels thrive on outrage. And there are now so. many. media channels wildly proliferating – with the sole exception of sober, fact-focused local news channels, which have steadily declined over the last couple of decades until they are now more or less extinct (although check out our page on reporting for sources of excellent independent reporting, and our page on good news for news of all the positive things going on!).
#How useful is outrage?
Outrage is a great source of emotional engagement, but it’s not very useful for focusing on facts or thinking sensibly about complex things.
Make no mistake – modern society is highly complex; more complex than any previous human society. So although we all have access to more information – more “facts” – than ever before, we’re also more overwhelmed by the sheer mass of “stuff” clamouring for our attention than ever before.
This makes it temptingly easy to concentrate on events – real or manufactured – that whip up our outrage, because we feel engaged when we’re angry. It’s also easier to feel than think. That’s not meant to sound patronising, it’s just that working through the many complex factors involved in devising actual solutions to today’s complex issues is really, really hard. Hard enough to make many of us feel totally powerless (if governments can’t do it, how can we?). But there are a lot of people out there coming up with amazing answers...
#Thoughtful action
That’s why this website focuses on thoughtful initiatives, actions, campaigns and writing that are seeking or provide solutions for various aspects of the “polycrisis” that is currently causing so much anxiety, uncertainty and, as a result, anger. Solutions range from individual actions to community initiatives, from new ideas to societal shifts.
And they are all open to input – ideally in the form of constructive commentary and ideas. But if you do want or need to criticise, please make your criticism constructive too!
